So, I've decided to donate my cord blood and placenta. After delivery, the umbilical cord and placenta are no longer needed and are often discarded. But the blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta is rich with blood-forming stem cells. These healthy blood-forming cells can be collected and stored so they can be used by a patient who needs them. It is frozen and stored in a bank and can be used later to help a child who is diagnosed with Lymphoma, Leukemia, Cancer or other life-threatening diseases. It warms my heart to know that I might be able to help a child who needs a bone marrow transplant and could possibly save that life!
